I'm new on here but would like some help on a problem I have.
Short story

For my own use I have captured the whole film of SUPERMAN RETURNS, being a big comic book fan, I loved the film but one thing I just couldnt get away with was the shade of red used for his costume, horrible.

So using Premier pro 2.0 I want to use the color correction tools to restore all the scenes superman appears in back to the normal reds of the christopher reeve movies.

Now my problem, I have gone through the help me files and online tutorials I have found and have managed to change the red, however it effects the rest of the red in the picture. It says in the help filmes you can enchance 1 color only but when I pick the red I want to change, I thought that would just select that area. Also because alot of the scenes are shot at night the dark parts of the red that arent lit in the scene and cast a shadow, doesnt change very well.

Is there a way I can get the result I want? I have done it on a few stills using photoshop, but the requires masking the area you want to change off and then using the hue and saturation to change the red, which works fine for stills, is it possible to get an effect as good using premier pro 2.0.

Surely I am not going to have to do it frame by frame in photoshop in port them back into to premier and match up the sound am I? If so the sequal will be made and on dvd before I get it done, then I will have that one to do aswell if the reds are still that dark.

This is my first post and I will be very grateful for any help as I have watched these boards for a while and there are some very helpful people on here.

Please also let me know if your require any more information before you can help me. Oh and please bear in mind that I'm not an expert at premier so try and explain nice and simple, incase the information given is asking me to go to areas of the program I dont' know how to find or even come across yet....

please anyone, lets not debate about which color is best, can anyone steer me in the right direction???

you should be able to adjust the levels - with in that add saturation to the reds only andit should sort it!

I think you're on the right lines. The trick as you say is to mask off the stuff that doesn't want the red 'enhanced'. In Premier Pro 2 you're pretty much stucjk with the likes of the 4/8 or 16 poihnt garbage matt. migth work and likely will for a whole bundle of scenes. For much better matting though, use After Effects.

Look like I will have to master affer effects then, if thats what it takes. Of course I will have to learn the software as I have never seen it since early 2000. Hopefully I will be able to get my head around it. Am I right in thinking that you can track motion in after effects, so you can mask out the areas you do not want to change or will I have to do it frame bye frame. Before I do go out and spend money on after effects, and chance you could further explain or point me to a tutorial on 4/8 or 16 point garbage matt in premiere, that would be most kind and helpful.

No tuturial necessary on the 4 or 8 or 16 point matt in PPro.

Drag and drop the effect of choice (depending on how many points you want) and keyframe the points through your video. The idea is that only the stuff within the shape is visible. so...

Layer one = original move - untouched.
layer two = new version with ALL red converted.
Add garebage matt to layer 2 so that the 4 8 or 16 point shape only include supy himself and you're away - or maybe even up up and away!!!

The thing with AE is that matts can be any spline curve you care to take the time to create and can be feathered too so you have much much more control.

Hi Alan,
Maybe I'm think but I have no idea what I am doing here, it seems to mask of shapes like traingles and lines, but can't make that fit so that the areas I want to change a visable. Do I have to have copy of the video on two different parts of the time line, one on top of the other?

Please get back to me as this is a new effect for me and I'm totally stuck.

yes you do.

you see the trouble woith changing reds is that skin tone will change with it because there is an element of red in that too. So youy need to apply a mask to the top layer that just changes the costume colour. And then the rest shows throyugh fromt he bottom layer untouched.
