I take your point about the storage capacity of DVD-R, Nikosony - that's why I only use them for small projects. Most of my projects are sub-5 minutes in duration (I try to make my films audience-friendly!). Not had a project yet that couldn't be trimmed to fit on a DVD-R (and I'm only using 4.7 Gig single layer discs).
Granted, they are slower to use than hard drives, but I'm not churning out projects every day, and there's always something else I can find to do in the 10 minutes it takes to burn a data DVD-R.
I agree that external drives are a better solution, and thats why I use one of those too. I was able to make my own using a 250 Gig ide drive and a USB/Firewire External Hard drive enclosure - total cost approx £70.
Works a charm.
But it works out at £0.28 per Gig
Sounds a lot? I bought 50 DVD-R's this week for £15.00 inc P&P.
That works out at £0.06 per Gig
Some people will argue that DVD-R's are an untested storage medium over the long term. This may be true, so I check mine and back them up occasionally. Hard drives can fail too - even external ones. I bet a lot of people who have had a hard drive failure have wished their data had been backed up to DVD-R...

Just a quick two-penneth to those that back-up on drives and quickly switch them off (then on again when backing up again).
Hard disk drives, generally, will only fail within their 30-40,000 hour expected life span when being powered up, or powered down.
As I say- just 2 pennies worth, but it may be worth considering keeping power cycles to a minimum. Or RAID drives- much better |

But then there's the guys that suggest increased boot cycles put more wear and tear on the drives . You can't win cos there'll always be someone that recommends something else on t'internet! Just like the age old, 'should I strip my DV tapes' |

I've currently got 278 DVD's, a mixture of +R, -R and both single and dual layers. I hope I'm not becoming paranoid. Yes, I agree about hard disks failing, thankfully that hasn't happened so far, touch wood.

Been following this thread and just thought my twopenny'rth might help. I have 2 linked PC's and I back up (using Vice Versa) every night to one of these http://www.buffalotech.com/products/...&categoryid=16
Then every week I back up the Linkstation to another external 250GB drive. That way the risk of data loss is greatly reduced..................I hope | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
