I can edit 1080p AVCHD footage on a late 2013 MacBook pro with an onboard graphic card, intel i7 and 8GB ram. As Tim says, space (and just as importantly the speed of harddrive) is critical. For the last 5+ years I've edited all my footage using external SSDs. In summary, a second hand laptop with an i7, 8GB ram and SSDs will do for you.

I've owned plenty of different camcorders over the years. They've all served me well but do they still have a place in 2021? It really depends on what you want / need, but for most users a phone will do everything a separate camcorder will do. In my experience the only benefit real benefit is optical zoom. So if you have no need of zoom (and you have a reasonably new phone), I'd buy a few gadgets for the phone. As Tim says, second hand can be an excellent choice. For example the Canon XC10...

Hi, and welcome. I see you've posted this and had lads of answers on avforums. We are a much lower traffic forum here so don't expect much in the way of response. Panasonic have a good reputation for camcorders at this sort of price range and the VXF990 looks like it fits the family. They have always been popular with members of amateur film making clubs. I have a HC-X1 which I've been a bit disappointed in but it doesn't put me off their cheaper (mid-price) cameras. I see someone is...

I don't know Filmora but that spec sounds seriously underpowered. The SSD at 128 is big enough for operating system and software. Yes there's room for some footage but very little. It's not possible to say how much space 1080Pfootage takes without knowing the codec you uses. Typically lower end cameras shoot with very highly compressed footage, which means much more footage per GB. Unfortunately this has to be decompressed by the computer so it requires far more power. One common solution...

Hello- Am planning on buying a new camcorder in the near future. After doing some research and drilling down on the price and features required, Panasonic HC-VXF990EB-K seems the best fit. Can you forum ppl give me your valuable feedback on the above camcorder in terms of: 1. Battery Life and any replacement battery or other options to keep the video capture going for longer duration. 2. Useability of this equipment in the left hand(How well possible. I’m in the process of making enquiries on obtaining for a pensioner lady a refurbished laptop to do some basic editing of her the footage from a small camcorder she has obtained. Until recently she had been learning this on my desktop machine but the virus lockdown has put a stop to that for months now. I have asked a firm who specialise in refurbished machines to advise on a machine with at least 16gb of memory and they have advised to upgrade to a SSD from a standard Hard Drive. I...

I like the look - appropriate Southern US for the country/rock music. There's a good mix of shots but you can never have too many variations with a music video. Try to capture some big close ups: People - eg mouths at microphones, fingers on guitars/keyboards, sticks on kit and feet on pedals: Things - guitar headstocks, drum cases, generally any "gear" you have around and "things" relating to the environment eg here you migt use ropes, capstans, ships wheel etc. Not only will these add even...

Agreed this looks great. The key thing with getting a dark background is to get as high a contrast as possible. I appreciate this is stating the obvious. Light the subject very brightly (whilst trying to avoid lighting the background a far as possible).the step down the exposure in camera. I guess you can do that with an iphone. I'm sure the background in this video is a matt black suface. When he has other stuff in the background (eg when he is spraying inside the box) it is very clearly...

Film and tape are fundamentally different technologies. Film is chemistry while tape is electronic/magnetic (based on different chemistry). Analog video produces discrete horizontal lines across the screen. The color imperfections are a result of compromises in the electronic signal. Film is based on different light sensitive compounds on a film substrate. If you zoom way in you'll see little particles of somewhat varying shapes and sizes, in three discrete colors, embedded in the film. The...

That's a film look. It might actually have been shot on film, like Super 8. VHS will never get you that collection of effects. Also, it's shot on an extremely hazy day. You might be able to mimic some of the film effects with blur and color adjustment. To get the effect of a hazy day you'll have to shoot on a hazy day.

Hi all, First post here. I've been transferring a video of mine from digital to tape for artistic effect (yes, I know about plug-ins etc that do this but I want to go the authentic way). This has been cool, but I'm not getting the big specks of grain that I'd like to have. Would any of you know how I should go about abusing my VHS tape in order to get the grain? Or any other ways to do this? For reference, looking for something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQEmaj9C6ko...

Skylum Luminar AI is an incredibly impressive bit of near automated photo editing software. It competes with and compliments the likes of Lightroom and a bit of Photoshop (can be even be used as a plugin for either) but is far, far more automated, smarter and much easier to use. Aurora HDR is one of the best software focusing mainly on HDR merging and processing. The software is powered by AI and it is well known for having no halos, artefacts or chromatic aberration in the final image....

You know I love your travel films but I'm afraid I'm not at all on mesage with this one. I don't want people telling me what I should do and that I owe it to myself or others to be the best I should be. I think I basically detest "aspirational movies". But hey. each to his own. Nice edit and shots though. agree with clay_9 about the audio. Stuff recorded "in the moment" on location is fine to be low quality (indeed it adds authenticity) but a high quality edit like his deserves a high quality...

A nice little story with a good mix of first and third person shots. I thought it could have been a bit tighter though, knowing when to cut away is really important. To keep it all moving along without feeling like it's dragging is really important. My biggest gripe, and it may be just me, is the way you have implemented the cut to the picture taken with the camera. For me it looks really messy having the images cut over the video, but only to 80% of the screen whilst still seeing the video...

Everything about this film reeks of high quality. The shots, the grading, the editing and the sound. Very well done. Unfortunately I lack the cultural, scientific, literary knowledge or possibly common sense to have any idea what it is about! (I do understadn the definition at the begining, just not how it relates to the film). Does this mean it's too clever, or I'm too stupid/ignorant? I love a film that makes me think, but not one where even when I think really hard I don't understand it. I...
