I have a 37 gig raptor 10000rpm for the system drive and i am sure it makes the pc smoother.

I have recently got very paranoid about drive failures / losing data / video. I now back stuff up using my old ide drives from my previous pc using a caddy so I can swap the drives and store them elsewhere in cae i am robbed... told you i am paranoid.

I am also considering a raid array in my pc, the safe kind, for further peace of mind. Maybe you could considor that, it does mean installing 2 drives and only getting the capacity of one.
