I've followed this thread with some interest. It seems to me that the error you're getting when trying to save a file would be generated if the file was also still open in Vegas or maybe even a different audio editor. Make sure it's not in use by any other program at the same time.

Not being sure of the audio tools in Vegas Movie Studio (I use the full version) I would have thought that there would be a way of altering volume at cetain points. Try right clicking the audio track (on the clip selected). If an option that says - Envelope - Volume appears, select it. A blue bar will appear on the track. In Vegas, you can click to create points on that bar to raise / lower volume at those points. Along at the left of the track, you may have an icon for Track FX too (I doubt it but it might be there). If it is, click that and in Vegas full you get all sorts of filters and tools to play with.
