Marc's nearly there, this is what I do...

Right click in the project window and create New Sequence (seq 2).

Highlight sequence 2's tab in the time line.

Drag sequence 1 from the project window onto sequence 2 in the timeline.

Sequence 1 is now nested in seq 2 and appears as a single clip- apply your movie-wide effects to this clip.

Any changes you make to sequence 1 will be automatically reflected in sequence 2 so you can go back and fiddle with your cuts etc without having to reapply fx to sequence 2.
