Digital 8 was a stop gap to DV proper. Same data recorded onto a hi 8 tape, but as others have said it's an old cruddy format and best avoided unless it's a really good s/h deal, like 50 quid.

I think you are wise to take the dvd camera back and swap it for a DV model.
