Well, I'm an absolute novice myself (I wrote my first post here yesterday), but I think you can do that simply in Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, the program I'm currently learning. I've just split a couple of AVI files myself, a one click operation.

If you have Windows, you should have the program available already, typically at
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe
or download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...r/default.mspx
