That's how I did mine.
However, you do have to be careful because you are effectively shooting the background twice as well as the subject. Big deal you might say. But if you're outside and the light changes between shots (i.e. the Sun goes behind a cloud) then you'll see the join. Also, make sure the background is static. If a tree is waving about in the breeze then make sure you mask around it.
