he's converting to DV-avi though, it should be played back fine.

Where in the world are you? You haven't shot NTSC footage, but exported as pal have you?

was the original capture jerky?

defragging is certainly worth a go, but i'm sure you'd have noticed other things being slow if your pc has trouble reading 4MB/sec.
